Description
This collection of digitized images, texts, and objects from the Oberlin College archives relates Oberlin's namesake, John Frederick Oberlin. Known in France as Jean-Frédéric but born in Strasbourg as Johann Friedrich, Oberlin was a Lutheran pastor in a remote region in Alsace. After reading a biography of Oberlin in 1830, the colony's founders were inspired to create a new community and institution of higher learning for scholars and students who wished to be of service to others and change the world for the better, as Oberlin had done in Alsace.
