John Frederick Oberlin Monument

Title

John Frederick Oberlin Monument

Description

This granite monolith located on the Oberlin College campus commemorates Oberlin's namesake, who was a pastor in the France in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The monument incorporates an optical effect that Oberlin used in his pastoral counseling: viewed from one side, the inset stone shows a flower image, but viewed from the other, it shows a bird on a branch. Designed by former Oberlin Professor of Art Paul Arnold and erected in 1995, the inscription on the monument reads: "Oberlin, Pastor of Waldersbach in Alsace, France, for whom Oberlin College was named, used the original of this optical curiousity shown above for pastoral counesling. His simple message--that people with diverse perspectives can live in friendship with one another--lies at the heart of the aspirations of this college."
