Wilson Bruce Evans House

Title

Wilson Bruce Evans House

Description

Wilson Bruce Evans and his brother, Henry Evans, were free African-Americans who lived in Oberlin. They built this house in 1855-1856 for Wilson Bruce Evans and his family. Wilson Bruce Evans was an abolitionist who participated in the 1858 Oberlin-Wellington Rescue and his home served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The house, evidence of Oberlin's vibrant 19th century African American community, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997. It remains in the hands of the Evans family and is currently being restored as a historic site.
