World War II Memorial Garden

Title

World War II Memorial Garden

Description

The World War II memorial garden commemorates the 75 Oberlin college alumni who were killed in World War II. Unusual for a war memorial, the Oberlin memorial lists the names of all alumni who died in the war--including Masura Nakamura, who fought for Japan. The memorial was designed by landscape architect James McKnight and completed in 1997. Its inscription reads, "“To perpetuate the memory of the men of Oberlin College who among untold millions lost their lives in the Second World War 1939-1945. They paid the ultimate cost of war.”
